Title IX

What would my life have been like had I not played basketball for my school in junior high and high school?  I loved that so much and I am so thankful for being able to learn a sport, to push myself physically. But Title IX goes beyond just sports and today is a day to celebrate all that it does.

Here is what one of my favorite sites, Feministing, has to say about Title IX today, the anniversary of its passing:

On June 23, 1972, Title IX was signed into law by President Nixon. Title IX is best known for it’s applications to women’s sports, but the law is actually much broader than that:

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. The U.S. Department of Education gives grants of financial assistance to schools and colleges. The Title IX regulation describes the conduct that violates Title IX. Examples of the types of discrimination that are covered under Title IX include sexual harassment, the failure to provide equal opportunity in athletics, and discrimination based on pregnancy.

Thank you, Title IX!!!
