Who uses violent rhetoric to talk about politics? Who is positioning conservatives and liberals as deadly enemies? Who is saying that it is going to come down to guns and bloodshed? Who is saying that we need to shoot the people in the head who we disagree with politically? Who is saying that our entire government, country, way of life will end if we aren’t willing today to pick up arms and shoot other Americans?
That, friends, would be Glenn Beck, on June 6th of this past year proudly aligning himself with the Tea Party and their ideals. And with killing liberals by SHOOTING THEM IN THE HEAD.
Daily Kos has the extended clip of him saying that it is imperative to shoot the liberals in Washington in the head before they shoot you. The transcript is there, too. Here is the key quote:
I will stand against you and so will millions of others. We believe in something. You in the media and most in Washington don’t. The radicals that you and Washington have coopted and brought in wearing sheep’s clothing change the pose. You will get the ends.
You’ve been using them? They believe in communism. They believe and have called for a revolution. You’re going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you.
In other, totally unrelated news: Democratic Representative, Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head less than two weeks ago, is a fucking superhero.
She is being moved today from Tuscon, where she has been since she was shot while meeting with constituents, to a rehabilitation center in Houston, Texas, where her husband, an astronaut, works. Seriously, as someone on Twitter said, her recovery is like the origin myth of a superhero.
Glenn Beck’s refusal to feel responsible when violence is used against the people he has called for violence against (check the date of this article – Oct 2010), to express regret for ever suggesting that someone should use violence against an elected official, and to admit in the face of video EVIDENCE that he uses violent rhetoric, along with his very fake and false “challenge” to everyone to stop, even denounce, those who use violence or call for violence against others (but has yet to denounce HIMSELF): that is the cowardice of a hateful idiot. But one with too much influence over angry and armed people.
So, I’ll say it again, please, for the love of all public officials and all loudmouthed radio talk show hosts and pundits, stop using the language of guns and shooting to talk about someone whose POLICIES and IDEOLOGIES you don’t like. It’s that simple. The First Amendment gives you that right. Now have some fucking responsibility and stop doing it.
