That VW Vader commercial will make you happy and not just because it’s gender neutral

Watch this and try not to smile:

Any interesting response to this commercial is the attempt to determine the gender of the child under the mask.

Sociological Images gives a run down.  So do the Mommy Files.

I love that the one single bedroom we see Vader in is gendered to represent a little girl’s room.  I know that VW confirmed it was a boy who played Vader but I want to believe that under that mask is a little girl who LOVES Star Wars (we know they are out there).  Because, why not?

I almost want to ask, “Do you think it’s a boy or girl”?  That’s a stupid question, though.  Because it doesn’t matter.  The kid could be both and that’s awesome.  Thanks, VW, for not forcing this child into a gender.  Thanks for letting all kids and adults who see this imagine themselves as that child.  That’s cool shit.
