[h/t to Juke, commenter at Shakesville’s post on DOMA news]
OMFG. OMFG. OMFG.
“While Americans want Washington to focus on creating jobs and cutting spending, the President will have to explain why he thinks now is the appropriate time to stir up a controversial issue that sharply divides the nation,” he said in a statement.
There is an actual reason that Obama and Holder chose now (other than to spur a “culture war”, which MUST be their intent). The administration had to decide before March 11 if it would defend DOMA in an upcoming case, one of the four now pending. It decided not to, you know, before March 11 (because today is Feb 23, which is conveniently before March 11) in time to allow members of Congress, if they so choose, to take their place.
And then the administration – awesomely – made a big deal about it, throwing its support publicly on the side of marriage equality for the first time ever in US history.
On a related and important note, I would like Mr. Boehner (fourth in line to be president in our country right now) to explain why he thinks now is the appropriate time to stir up a controversial issue that sharply divides the nation instead of focusing on creating jobs and cutting spending. I’m not sure that redefining rape, stripping funding to Planned parenthood, and trying to strip bodily autonomy away from women are doing anything except exactly what he claims Obama is doing.
OH WAIT – except that what Speaker Boehner is doing is taking away access to resources that women especially use and is spotlighting the fact that he and his conservative buddies think women are second class citizens in this country. And Obama? Well, he is expanding civil rights for a group that has for too long been discriminated against by a federal government that should instead be protecting it.
So, please, for the sake of all women in this country and for the love of all gay Americans, John Boehner, SHUT THE FUCK UP!
