First, Giffords (from Mar 3):
Doctors have said Giffords is “recovering at lightning speed.” She has started speaking again, and Lyon told KHOU-TV that the congresswoman sang Don McLean’s “American Pie” with her Tucson rabbi, Stephanie Aaron, when Aaron visited Houston. Lyon is a longtime friend of Aaron’s.
Lyon also said Giffords is enjoying comfort food as she recovers.
“Well, she had a little chicken soup with matzo balls,” the rabbi said. “I think that’s fair to report, and as we know, it is Jewish penicillin.”
Now, the man who tried to assassinate her, Loughner (from today):
Shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner is back in Tucson, where he went to federal court to face charges contained in a 49-count indictment that prosecutors released last week.
In court Wednesday afternoon, Loughner pleaded not guilty to dozens of charges, which include murder, attempted murder and using a gun in a crime of violence.
The arraignment is likely to be Loughner’s last before his trial begins, says NPR’s Ted Robbins in a report for Newscast.
Also, this, referencing hearings that began today – “The upcoming terror hearings and Arizona’s domestic terrorism problem. Letter to Congressmen Keith Ellison and Peter King:”
We are aware of the upcoming “terror hearings” that will be heard by members of the Homeland Security Committee. We believe that it is a good idea for Homeland Security Committee Chairman Pete King (R-NY) to call for the hearing, however, we should not limit the “homegrown terrorists” to Muslim Americans living in this country because we believe the concern should also apply to any other hate group regardless of race, religion and color.
For instance, we have our own home grown terrorists near our border, and they are not Muslim. Recently the Pima County jury convicted Shawna Forde of two counts of first-degree murder in the May 30, 2009 deaths of Arivaca residents Raul Junior Flores and his 9-year-old daughter, Brisenia. Most Americans have never heard of these senseless murders of a family in their home near the Arizona border with Mexico; because they were not undocumented immigrants, drug smugglers, or Muslim terrorists, but a group of Minutemen (also known as domestic terrorists), led by their leader, Shawna Forde. Forde was also a member of the Minutemen Civil Defense Corp (MCDC), until leaving to form her own group, Minutemen American Defense, and has appeared on TV as a representative for FAIR. Shawna Forde also had a long criminal record before joining any of the Minutemen groups.
In addition to the “terror hearings, we are asking Congressman Peter King, Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, to conduct a complete and thorough investigation on other forms of domestic terrorism – specifically as it relates to border vigilantes. This epidemic of domestic terrorism and hate crimes are on the rise because of vigilantes along our border, Minutemen, Nativists, Neo-Nazis, and any other extremist groups.
If the upcoming hearings are isolated to Muslims only, we would ask other members of Congress to initiate and complete a thorough investigation of all domestic terrorist groups regardless of race, religion and color. The shooting of our Congresswoman Gabby Giffords should put us all on alert, and we should take every opportunity to investigate all other forms of domestic terrorism where hate is palpable.
On that note of domestic terrorism that no one wants to pay attention to, Shakesville:
Hey, remember back in January, I wrote about an incident of Totally Not Terrorism that our Liberal Media couldn’t be arsed to report widely, in which a backpack bomb was found along the parade route of a Martin Luther King Day event in Spokane, Washington…? […]
It would be awesome if our media could start caring about, talking about, raising awareness about radicalized white supremacist hate groups who are trying to kill US citizens on the basis of their skin color, before they’re actually successful in hurting/killing people on massive scale.
Or, you know, every cable news channel could just endlessly discuss the horror that someone at NPR called the Tea Partiers racist.
Of course, it was a suspected white supremacist who put that bomb at a MLK Day parade.
And we are worried about Islamic terrorists? Wait – WHO is worried about Islamic terrorists? And why aren’t they worried about these incidents of domestic terrorism? I wonder what Gabriel Giffords would have to say to them about that…
