[TW] Rape Culture

From this week alone:

1) Toronto Tweeter Causes Uproar Over Violent “Beat Up Anita Sarkeesian” Game

Women in TO Politics organizer Stephanie Guthrie isn’t known for keeping quiet. When gamer Bendilin Spurr launched the violent and sickening “Beat Up Anita Sarkeesian” game, Guthrie took to the Internet: “So I found the Twitter account of that fuck listed as creator of the ‘punch a woman in the face’ game. Should I sic the internet on him?”

The update to this article…

Anita Sarkeesian has written a statement regarding this article for Toronto Standard. Read it here. Stephanie Guthrie received multiple death threats following the publication of this article. Police are now involved and the offending users have been reported to Twitter for account violations.

2) Women’s Media Center’s releases report on rape as a weapon of war in Syria

“The data we have so far suggest sexualized violence is being used as a tool of war, although possibly haphazardly and not necessarily as an organized strategy,” said Dr. Karestan Koenen, associate professor of epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and the lead epidemiologist on the mapping project. “These reports indicate that post-conflict intervention will need to address the consequences of sexualized violence for victims.”

Government perpetrators have committed the majority of the attacks we’ve been able to track: 61 percent, including attacks against men and women, with another 6 percent carried out by government and shabiha forces together. These soldiers or officers have allegedly carried out 58 percent of rapes against women; shabiha (plainclothes militia) attackers 14 percent; government and shabiha working together 5 percent; and another or unknown attacker 26 percent. In 42 percent of the incidents of sexualized violence against women that we found, the victims were allegedly attacked by multiple people at once, suggesting a disturbingly high rate of gang rape.

3) A big-time web comic famous for its rape “jokes”, is supported by Kickstarter for a useless project that only serves to promote the pro-rape joke comic and Kickstarter itself. (I am sure that #3 on this list has nothing to do with Anita Sarkeesian’s Kickstarter project that started the now LONG chain of misogyny and threats that Sarkeesian has endured for weeks (the hate she has received continues to baffle and sadden me). TOTAL coincidence in timing.)

4) Daniel Tosh “jokes” that woman in audience should be raped at stand-up show

Here is what I have to say about Tosh: Calculating (OR what it’s like to be a woman in ‪rape culture‬) (OR why I tweeted about Tosh for 24hrs)

5) And today, Penn State University is releasing its 267-page internal investigation into the total failings of basically every single person at PSU who knew anything about Sandusky’s behavior in the DECADES leading up to his arrest and now conviction.

The most senior officials at Penn State University failed for more than a decade to take any steps to protect the children victimized by Jerry Sandusky, the longtime lieutenant to head football coach Joe Paterno, according to an independent investigation of the sexual abuse scandal that rocked the university last fall.

“Our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disregard for the safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims,” said Louis J. Freeh, the former federal judge and director of the F.B.I. who oversaw the investigation. “The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized.”

Freeh’s investigation — which took seven months and involved more than 400 interviews and the review of more than 3.5 million documents — accuses Paterno, the university’s former president and others of deliberately hiding facts about Sandusky’s sexually predatory behavior over the years.

One new and central finding of the Freeh investigation is that Paterno knew as far back as 1998 that there were concerns Sandusky might be behaving inappropriately with children. It was then that the campus police investigated a claim by a mother that her son had been molested by Sandusky in a shower at Penn State.

Highlights from Freeh report from Pulitzer-prize winning reporter, Sara Ganim.

Rape culture is alive and well. Thriving, I’d said.
