[Content note: discussion of abuse]
John Darnielle is the lead singer of the band The Mountain Goats and, I’m proud to say, my friend. Meeting him in person last(!) year was a highlight of 2012 for me — we talked parenting, NARAL, and Classics (ancient Greece and Rome).
He is also just a really good guy.
For some background on John and the very personal experiences of his life that he puts into his beautiful music, this is a great profile (which also explains why Mountain Goats fans are so rabid and devoted).
I met John through Twitter where he is hilarious, a loud pro-choice ally, and often references hard metal rock bands I’ve never heard of.
He is also sometimes incredibly profound, his words poignant, his emotions clear even couched in the very rigid confines of Twitter’s 140-character limits. This was true last night:
For those who may not be able to see the embedded tweets, they read:
I try to talk to everybody all the time but I have a special word for all my fellow abuse survivors tonight ok. if you make it to midnight tonight do you understand what that means? TOTAL VICTORY YET AGAIN. AND AGAIN. AND AGAIN. so here’s to us & here’s to all of us because I bet this year had its brutal speed bumps for more people than just me but guess what. surviving is what we do, and yet again, we did. Thanks to everybody who saw me through this one. And understand this, too: even if you feel like you’re barely scraping by, your survival is meaningful to others. To me, for example.
And this fits perfectly with the song I can’t seem to help but listen to on repeat today: Mountain Goats’ “This Year” (from The Sunset Tree)
I am a fan of John Darnielle.
