Brent Musburger is gross.

I captured this bit of football commentary tonight during the BCS National title game (Alabama vs. Notre Dame, though it’s not clear if Notre Dame actually showed up for the game):

Transcript:

Brent Musburger (BM): Now, when you’re a quarterback at Alabama, you see that lovely lady there? She does go to Auburn, I will admit that. But she’s also Ms. Alabama and that’s AJ McCarron’s girlfriend, ok?

And right there on the right is Dee Dee Bonner, and that’s AJ’s mom.

Wow, I’m telling you, you quarterbacks, you get all the good looking women.

Kirk Herbstreit (KH): [laughing]

BM: What a beautiful woman. WOW.

KH: AJ’s doing…

BM: WOA!

KH: …some things right

BM: If you’re a youngster at Alabama, start getting the football out and start throwing it around the backyard with pop.

KH: [getting back to their jobs] Big series for Notre Dame.

Apparently you cannot but help but verbalize your hard on, Brent. That’s gross and you are supposedly a professional.

Your comments were disrespectful to Katherine Webb, to Dee Dee Bonner, to AJ McCarron, to every girl watching who heard you determine a woman’s worth solely on her looks, to every boy watching who learned from you that it’s okay to determine a woman’s worth solely on her looks, to every person who determines their personal worth in a way other than measuring the looks of their partner, and to every person who is watching ESPN to see and hear about football.

Even if Webb or Bonner are okay with what Musburger said, I’m not. I don’t watch football to listen to that kind of garbage.

This is the understood price that women pay when they decide to watch men’s sports — having to watch and listen to another woman be sexualized and drooled over. Gross.

Veronica at Viva la Feminista:

Most decent human beings are still in shock over the Steubenville, Ohio football rape case. The photo above comes from the protests held over the weekend. A little girl simply saying that she is more important than football.

Her sign is not just a call to prosecute any football players who participated in the rape, but a call to stop treating her like a thing. That sign is demanding recognition of her humanity; the humanity of all girls and women.

Melissa McEwan at Shakesville:

I want to additionally note that, in one fell swoop, Musburger draws the boundaries around football as a space for straight men whose reward for throwing around a ball with “Pop” (because Ma would get her girl cooties all over it) is beautiful light-skinned women (because the Objectification Cam never lingers on dark-skinned girlfriends and dark-skinned mothers, while commentators sexualize them and talk about them like trophies).

Maya at Feministing (quoting the awesome Travis Waldron):

So, now seems like a good time to point out that this bullshit is part of the rape culture that directly enables assaults like those in Steubenville and Notre DameAs Travis Waldron writes, “It’s a culture that views women as nothing more than chattel, a commodity to be won by the best player even if she isn’t a willing participant. It fosters a sense of entitlement to women and their bodies that only ingrains the rape and violence culture deeper into the game.”

  1. Hey, I just wanted to alert you about a possible thoughtcrime I witnessed. About 1/2 hour ago, Don Lemon on CNN told Leigh Anne Tuohy that she was “better looking” than Sandra Bullock. Sounds to me like he’s part of the rape culture that we’re worried about. Glad I caught him at it.

I can help you find CNN’s address if you’d like to lodge a formal complaint.

The good thing is that he didn’t tell her that her looks were her sole source of worth, like Mussberger did. Oh wait, Mussberger didn’t say that.

  2. Wow. Look at you. So invested in making sure that you’re right about Musberger that you are google searching for blogs and being an asshole weeks after the post was written.

I hope you feel better because, shockingly, your condescending, dickish comment has not changed my mind at all.

  3. Hey, I missed your “President Obama is gross” posting. Can you provide a link? You’re aware of what he said about Attorney General Kamala Harris, right? About how pretty she was, right? His comment must be a manifestation of a larger “rape culture”, right?

My guess is you won’t have the guts to post this comment.

  4. Oh Willy. Presuming (from the nature of your comment) that you are a hetero cis man, are you so fucking insecure that you have to pull this kind of shit?

Grow the fuck up and recognise the harmful culture you are engaging in, promoting and, it seems, championing.

Not only do your dickish views not convince anyone, they simply reinforce the views we already hold about people like you. So I suppose we ought to thank you, really. You’re doing our job for us. Declaring just what arsehole behaviour it all is.

  5. Wait, asking the author to be consistent in her principles is “insecure” or “dickish”? And what is my level of participation in the “harmful culture”? I don’t watch football or approach women, and I’ve never raped anyone.

What are your thoughts on Obama’s rapelike comments about Attorney General Harris?

  6. Being a smarmy shit makes you what you are. Your “thought-crime” comment highlights precisely what sort of person you are. And your taking Obama’s comment out of context shows just how fucking stupid you are.

And holy shit, you thinking that scATX has two readers just shows how incredibly, sadly uninformed you are, and incapable of researching the people you try to attack.

You, like so many of your kind, cry foul when being called out and expect people to educate you. To explain how your behaviour is harmful, that you think having not raped anyone makes you some kind of fucking hero.

Your failure to understand rape culture, your refusal to do your own research, and your pathetic attempt at tone argument just makes you a joke.

Oh, I bet you won’t have the guts to reply to this. LOL. Oh what a joke.
