Boy Scouts Delay Vote On Whether To Be Slightly Less Terrible Until May

I wrote two posts last week about my skepticism about the “good” that would be done if the Boy Scouts of America decided this week to finally lift their national ban on gay scouts and troop leaders: To Be Clear (pt. 1) and To Be Clear (pt. 2).

For the all discussion about how this move by the Boy Scouts would be a big leap forward in gay rights (though it wouldn’t have been), I am completely unsurprised by this news today:

The BSA got all the hype and all the people cheering it on and, in the end, it takes no action and nothing has changed.

The news was SO heavily YAY, BOY SCOUTS! that I wonder if this failure on their part to follow through will have as much of an impact as the narrative created by the media last week.

As I’ve said before, my disdain for the BSA knows no bounds.

  1. All of this is just confirmation of why I will never, ever allow my son to be part of the organization. Not just the anti-gay stance and the waffling on making changes, but the active religious discrimination, too. My daughter, on the other hand, has been a Girl Scout for three years. I have already explained to my son why he can’t be a Boy Scout, so he’s stopped asking. He did, however, ask to be a Girl Scout. 🙂

  2. As a lifetime member of girl scouts and someone who hopes to sponsor a troop one day – he could join mine =)
